Excerpts from a Stoa Lesson
on psychology and the subconscious
What is the reality now? We can use the Supersubstance of the Mind, consciously, with responsibility. What have we done until now? Using it instinctively and subconsciously, not to say unconsciously (not to say sinfully). We must study the nature of this Mind in our subconscious. Psychology and psychiatry are using this word without knowing what it is. I asked many psychiatrists "What is subconsciousness. Why are you using the words you don't understand what they are?" A psychiatrist asked me "Do you know?" Of course, I do. This psychiatrist is now studying these things. I had to repeat many times until now that psychology and psychiatry are in its infancy yet. Psychology is only on the pages of books written by certain people (Freud, Jung, Adler) - serving nobody. This science must become part of our life, something to use. And again you will ask "How?" Now, to know that something is true we must make sure that we are right. Any chemist can take a formula and work with it in his lab. If a German, an Englishman, an American, a Chinese, a Japanese, with a laboratory, took that same formula they'll get the same effects by mixing the elements. So we cannot doubt.
What about us? Do we have a laboratory for this subconsciousness? Our bodies (our etheric double, our psychical and noetical body). The formulas have been given by Buddha, by the other prophets, by the Godman - Joshua Emmanuel, the Christ.
Now, what do we need? To work on the formulas. And how do we know that we are right? Because, what we'll find out, the other Seekers of the Truth have found out too - in old Egypt, in old Greece, in China, in Palestine, everywhere - the results are the same: research and work in the human subconsciousness.
Somebody will say "Why don't you give us this formula?" I have given it. Through introspection, searching and looking within. Everybody who looks sincerely will reach the right decisions, will reach the relative truth of it, which the old Egyptians, the old Greeks, old Chinese, all through the centuries had found out.
What did they find? That you are gods, Spirit-Soul Egos. Sons of God. All of them said that. Yet, Christ said, "You should know the truth ..." personally and knowing it "... the truth will set you free from the illusions."
So, that is the most important thing - to know the difference between the thinker who can make decisions and the egoism fascinated by the desires and the emotions, deceiving us that it is our-self. It is not so difficult to find out these differences.
What happens then? You'll find out that this egoism of yours, of your personality (of a man or a woman), is sometimes very, very cunning. A real devil. You should just be very careful. "You are not me. I thought I was you. But, now, I am not you." By checking the desires, the emotions, and the thoughts (how the thoughts are going to serve those desires) you can get to conclusions. Then, that fellow, even as a personal self (we said that God, our Self, is in the personality also) will feel being the master of circumstances and - of his personality. To reach to that stage it is important to neglect and disenergize the personal egoism. One can do it and must do it, because, there is no other way to get out of the illusions, of the agony, and of all those evil things in daily life. This is the way. The way of introspection and right thinking. There is no other way.
And then? Make decisions to cause changes and find the right way to do that (I said, fighting the elementals you'll definitely, sooner or later, be defeated) - by disentangling the personality (the self now as a thinker) from the influence of those things around (by convincing yourself that you don't care any more about all that), disenergizing those elementals influencing you, torturing you all the time, and letting them go to what we call the Cosmic Consciousness, the Cosmic Memory to sleep there until somebody, vibrating the same rate of vibrations will draw one of them, revitalize it and make it part of his personality.
So, we have to work hard and sincerely with ourselves in introspection. Work to understand the nature of desires, of emotions (all emotions), checking our behavior, entering our subconsciousness to check our intentions in life. These are the most dangerous and we should get rid of them - they are directing our life every day - the intentions of the Present-Day-Personality.
I think that the so-called orthodox science and psychology and parapsychology should engage themselves to study all that, instead of opening books and taking instructions from Freud, Jung and all that nonsense. There is only one book you can rely on - the book of your life. Study your life. Study within.
I had a professor of psychology from a university. Of course I won't mention his name. He wouldn't like it. He came to me with a pile of books from Freud (and others) to discuss on certain things. I was laughing. He was speaking, and speaking, and speaking ... until I told him, "Professor, you are wasting your time. What you are telling me is that you are getting results as causes to reach decisions by seeing other results ... Do you know what you are doing? If I take you into a field and a river is coming from somewhere flooding all that field and you get a shovel to try to stop it here, and then there, and then at another place ... and then the water starts to overflow and you start all over again - all in vain. What you have to do is to find the source, go over there, and change the route of the river, and - everything will be all right. The water will not overrun." He started thinking, "Maybe you are right." "No, I am right - it's not 'maybe' I am right." He said, "But,..." Of course, I had another fellow around who spoke naturally, "These stupid books will mislead me no more." I said, "Unfortunately, my dear professor, this science is in its infancy yet." "What can we do?" "Work on it! Work. Just start on yourself by introspection, because, there is no great difference in you and the others. Studying yourself you may know the personality of others also. And then, work on these lines in the future." Now he is working on these lines and I am sure he'll present very valuable books to serve psychology and parapsychology. But, that is not only a work for a professor of psychology. It is the duty of every human being, a man or a woman, so that that human being can come out of the troubles, the illusions of daily life, to know where each person stands in the society.
